An Ocean Realm Media Production

July 2008: Gary Levine, who built the first phase of the most unusual reef in the world - www.nmreef.com - in the Key Biscayne Special Management Zone (about 5 miles southeast of Miami Beach) has received approval to build another one. SAVE THE REEFS will be the manmade reef with a message. It will, in fact, 'speak' for the fish.

Sue Cocking, the Miami Herald's outdoor writer announced the project in the 4 May 2008 edition of the paper in her story 'Art coming to ocean floor.' Click the images to enlarge in a separate window.

There will be 3000 stacks of reef material, similar to records stacked on a spindle (for those of you who remember record players), with more than 13,000 700-lb 'circles of life.'

Listen to my internet radio program, Liquid Lounge - www.blogtalkradio.com/kenenglish on Wednesday at 1 PM EST for a weekly progress report. Gary will be discussing the process, while Carl Olsen will talk about the non-profit organization Coral Reefs 101.

The International Year of the Reef - www.iyor.org - and the Coral Reef Symposium are also part of the show. A new segment is dedicated to the EcoArt Gallery by the Sea project initiated by the Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach - www.ECOMB.org/ecoart.html.
